Efforts to minimise thermal losses induce the window producer to increase the thickness of window frames and wings. Greater thickness ensures better thermal parameters and allows the windows to be fitted with high quality triple-pane insulation glazing. Let’s take a moment to consider the most suitable type of triple-pane glazing.
If you are searching for high quality windows you should pay attention to the Uw parameter, i.e. the heat transfer coefficient of the entire window. The Uw value for passive homes should be at least 0.8 W.m-2K-1.
Another parameter identified as Ug is the value of glazing heat transfer - Ug value of high quality triple-pane glazing is below 0.8 W.m-2K-1.
So far, the decision is quite obvious. You just compare the parameters. Is there anything else you should be aware of? The decisive indicator is the parameter of solar gain - the g value. This figure indicates the percentage of solar radiation that passes through the window into the interior. E.g. windows with g=50% transmit 50% of solar radiation. If you want to save energy in the spring and autumn your home should be heated by sunshine as much as possible.
Some producers offer windows with excellent insulation properties but the transmission of only 40% of solar radiation. This means higher energy consumption for heating and higher costs.
ALBO® has introduced a new product. An intelligent solar wooden window with triple-pane insulation glazing, parameters Uw=0,8 W.m-2K-1, Ug=0,6 W.m-2K-1 and solar gain parameter g=63%! The window has excellent insulation properties and transmits 63% of sunshine.
Overall U value Uw=0,71 W.m
